new user!sound problems

hi everyone im new to this forum so any help would be appreciated,i`m unable to hear any audio at all through my desktop speakers,either when trying to play an audio cd or when watching a clip on youtube.

i have tried all the obvious, checked connections\wires,mutes,volume levels,device drivers all appear ok not showing errors or error messages just no sound. am i missing something obvious?(dell dimension 8400 with xp o/s)

Have you tried that old favourite, shut down and reboot.

Did this problem suddenly start? Also, have you tried the speakers on another machine to make sure it's not a hardware fault?

Have you tried using headphones ??

think it might be software conflicting problem didnt start until i downloaded vlc media player,im gonna try uninstall to try and fix it.
