Hi all,

I have recently installed Service Pack 2 on my HP Pavilion 422.fr computer.
Unfortunately for me since doing so and being prompted to reboot upon
installation it has ceased to work.

In other words, it doesn't actually boot up to the Windows Desktop, but
actually goes around and around in a boot loop so to speak.

I have tried booting up in Safe Mode by pressing F8, but it just does the
same as mentioned above.

Unfortunately I don't know of a way to sort this problem out as I can't
actually access Windows to uninstall Service Pack 2.

Can anyone on this list offer any solutions?

Many thanks in advance,
Antony

Hi Antony

Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration' - same screen as Safe Mode?

I would turn it on, hit F2 repeatedly until I got the setup screen. I would
then change the boot sequence to boot from CD before drive C. I would then
put the operating system CD in and boot the system again. When the window
pops up asking if you want to boot from the CD, YES will be highlighted, so
just click Enter. When everything is loaded, I would 1st try a Repair
System and if that doesn't work, I would then do an Install and start over.

That's what I did anyway

Antony;
How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if the
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

Hi

I'd suggest the same as Jupiter has - a 'Repair' install of XP. From the
error messages you are seeing, I don't think you are going to be able to
access Windows ATM.

Maybe a stupid question, but will a repair install wipe the things already
on the hard drive?

Antony;
Normally all data and settings are safe with a Repair Installation.
That is one reason why it is a good tool before a Clean Installation.

Hi Antony

I see to be a few minutes behind Jupiter. A 'Repair' install should retain
all your settings, files and programs.

See if I can get in before you next time JJ :-))

The nice thing about multiple answers, especially where personal data is
concerned, is there is a check to help verify the correct answer is given.
