New "Unrecognized" Folder Appeared

REF: WinXP Pro SP3

Lately a new "Unrecognized" folder has appeared on each of my hard
drives.

"$RECYCLE.BIN" (hidden/system)

That is an exact quote.

This is in addition to "Recycled" & "RECYCLER" folders.

Anyone know what this folder is?

Run a virus test on it

I found the fix/solution!

Went to the *Microsoft Fix it Solution Center*
http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

Used the top option:
*Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically*

The downloaded file installed PowerShell and ran the tool.

I selected "Other" from the checkbox list and continued.

The tool found that my Recycle Bin was corrupted AND fixed it. Then I
rebooted.

REMINDER: In the root of ALL my hard drives there was an ADDITIONAL
folder $RECYCLE.BIN (system/hidden) which is not normal.

AFTER the Fix-it run and reboot, the $RECYCLE.BIN folder was no longer
system/hidden AND *inside* was the *normal Recycle Bin folder*.

All that I had to do is move the normal Recycle Bin folder to the root
of each hard drive then delete the empty $RECYCLE.BIN folder.

Hay, sometimes Microsoft does get things right.

In XP, the Recycler folder appears in the root (if you enable "Show
hidden files and folders") if the volume is NTFS.

If the volume is FAT32, you will instead have a Recycled folder (which
should have a Recycle Bin icon instead of a folder icon).

If a volume was converted from FAT32 to NTFS, you would probably have
both, though the Recycled folder would no longer be used, and could be
deleted.

I'm curious what scenario your system falls under.

WinXP Pro SP3 NTFS

Of course I do have show hidden/system enabled, or I would not be able
to see the problem I had.

As for the "Recycled" folder, I will have to confirm this with WinXP
Pro SP3 pure installs at work.

Recently I found a folder called \\EK9455D8B9 in my Network.

Could anyone tell me what this is about? It is very suspect. I have never allowed remote assistance and do not allow remote connections.

A quick response would be appreciated.

Thanks
