New to pivot tables-can they do this....?

Hello,

I have rows of records containing a variety of column field entries. I
want to use a pivot table not in its traditional "add up the values
in columns D, E, F" way, but more like you would a normal filter to
view/print/sort data.

eg. Show/print coulmn field entries D, E F for all row entries that
have column field A="x," B="y" and C="z".

Its seems quite simple/fundamental but am I trying to do something
Pivot Tables aren't really designed to do?

I can achieve a similar kind of thing if I manually hide, filter and
sort columns and Set Print Area, but Pivot Tables seem such a fast
quick way to view, present and print the data you want.

You can add fields to the Page area of the pivot table, and use them to
filter the data that's shown.

Thanks but I am not sure if what you are suggesting gets me what I
want.

For example, lets say you have records of people, their unique
identifier tag being in column A. All the othe columns contain info on
other things about them
eg. age, sex, weight, height,country of origin, profession etc.

What I want to know is if you can use a pivot table to quickly create a
custom list of records of people (for example, are female and from the
USA) and show just a selection of the column entries asscociated with
each record for each person (eg. height, weight, profession).

Note that in this "filterd" list, there is no need or relevance in
summing up any of the column entrie. The only thing than woudl need to
be summed up would be the number of people in the list.

With Gender and Country fields in the page area, you could filter for
female and USA.

In the row area, put the other fields you want to display
In the data area, put the ID field, as Count of ID, and you'll get a
count of each group
At the bottom of the pivot table, you can show a grand total, which will
give you the overall count.

Or, you could use an AutoFilter or Advanced Filter to show only the
specific records.
