New to networking

Ok, fate is letting me take the plunge for free. Someone upgrading their
network simply put a server out on the sidewalk and I snatched it up. It has
both processors and all the ram, all I have to do is add the drives (hard,
cd and floppy), a couple of nic¹s and I am set. I have windows 2000 server
and advanced server.

My questions: if I am not hosting websites or mail servers, what is the
point of a server for the home? We have two computers and two laptops and
they are fine going through the router. If I decide to install it, would it
be cable modem>server>router>other comps or cable modem>router>server>other
comps?

Tips and links gladly accepted and thanks

Greetings all

Was in the process of upgrading my companies servers when someone
pinched em. We had to put them out on the sidewalk while we shifted
some hardware around. 4 units lost!! Luckily as a precaution I had
removed our hard drives. Saddening to see this happen in this day and
age.

If you are going to be installing ICS or RAS and using the server as a router then the server would take the place of the router unless there is some reason
you need it. otherwise, If you just want to create a domain and install this as a Windows 2000 domain controller, and allow the router to handle internet
access then you will just need a single nic and connect the server to the router along side the other computers. Depends on what you want to accomplish.
