New To Home Networking

Ok im a relative novice so any help well appreciated. Ive just decided to get
broadband from BT, received the adsl router and the filters etc, thats all
hooked up and my pc is connected, heres where im not sure what to do.

I have a laptop which id like to connect to the internet when im at home
using the broadband, i know i could get a wireless network card which should
allow me to connect to my homes network but i wont be able to get one of
those for a week or so, I have an ethernet NIC which i could use but have no
knowlege of how to connect to the network this way. Do i need to physically
connect the laptop to the router ie using a cable for the ethernet NIC to
work? If so what sort of cable do i use?

My laptop runs xp prof. o/s.

Daz,

If the network card on the laptop is properly installed, a simple straight-thru
Ethernet cable from any computer or electronics store should connect to the
router. Just connect the laptop as the desktop computer is connected, and you
should be in business.

If you don't get internet service after connecting the laptop, provide ipconfig
information for each computer, and we'll figure it out here.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.
7) Please don't munge or omit any detail, as a case like yours will best be
resolved with details.

All sorted chuck, installed new driver for the NIC, enabled DHCP on the
