new Sd RAM

I recently purchased a stick of P133 256mb SD RAM. I had been running 196mb SDRAM but I replaced my 64 with the 256, upon starting my dell, the computer informed me there had been a memory decrease and the memory was now only 128MBRAM. But i continued into windows but it would not let me proceed, I realized I had hibernated not turned off my computer. So I replaced the ram, went into windows, shut down and replaced the new ram, once a gain, a 128 and 256. But upon rebooting my computer it still doesn't detect the new ram, and I can't get into windows I am put in front a black monitor with the message

Invalid Boot.ini

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Windows\System32\Hal.dll

I can't get into windows so any help not involving going into windows would be greatly appreciated, thank

Hello Jem
XP while very ram friendly it is also very picky, as you have found out,
first make sure which speed of ram that your computer takes (pc-100, pc-133,
ect.) it is very important, ram is not as it used to be pc-133 will not work
in pc-100 puters anymore.
If your computer is 133 compatible then take the 128 chip out and put the
256 chip in and see if it will boot then if not it is possible that you got
a bad chip.
It is always better to match chips but not always necessary.

Upon replacing the 128 stick of ram with the 256 stick, the computer boots up and reminds me once again that hal.dll is missing or corrupted and must be re-installed before windows xp can start

Sounds like you may have purchased single sided memory. Some Dells will only
see half the total memory unless double density memory is used
