New DDR-Rams cause monitor flickering when fast window movements ?

P

Peter Meister

I upgraded an older ASUS motherboard (K7VTA2) from 1 x 128 MB SD-RAM to 2 x 512 MB DDR-RAMs.

Yes, my Motherboard has two different RAM-Slots/Banks:
two for older SD-RAMs and
two for newer DDR-RAMs

However, since then my Monitor occasionally starts to flicker when I drag windows over the desktop.
Parts of windows remain on the screen when dragging. The whole desktop is not completely rebuilt

Why ?

Everything else seems to work fine.
The full 1 GB memory is recognized (as visible in the TaskManager).

Maybe I have to change some RAM settings in my BIOS because of the RAM type switch.

The current settings are:

Current FSB Frequency=133 Mhz
Current DRAM Frequency= 100 Mhz
DRAM Clock=100Mhz
DRAM timing=Manual
SDRAM Cycle length=2.5
Bank interleave=4 Bank
DRAM Queue depth=4 level
DRAM Command Rate=2T Command

Do I have to change these settings?

I am using WinXP+SP2
My video card is a GeForce FX5200

If you are using both the new and the old ram, get rid of the old and see if
the problem still exist.
Also check the specs on the new ram as it may be not as aggressive as the
settings you indicated in your BIOS.

If you purchased from a reputable Ram manu. their tech support would advise
of the settings for your specific ram/mobo/cpu combination.

"not completly rebuilt" why not retire the board....100 & 133 ram is
obsolete as
is the processor slot 370....Either way,power off pc,remove battery,locate
the
CMOS jumper pin on the board (usually L.right),move the pin from 1-2 to 2-3
position for .30 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,replace battery, start
pc.You'll
need to reset basic BIOS settings before you start running pc...

Could this be some other issue, i.e. caused by more RAM, not
by different RAM? Or by two modules instead of one?

If this is an AGP vieo card, you might want to try seting
the AGP bus to a slower setting.

I have not seen a motherboard that could handle more than one memory type at a
time.

You need to read the manual for jumper settings for the DDR and remove the SDR
module. The jumper must be changed.
