New SATA drive freezes

I just installed a new 300 GB Maxtor SATA drive and copied partitions from my
old IDE drives it's going to replace using Norton Ghost. I set the BIOS with
the SATA primary boot drive. Windows starts, but freezes at the pale blue
"Windows Starting" screen. It never gets to the account signon. Has anyone
seen this before?

Yes, I have seen this occour a couple of times. Most likely the .dll's in
your copy of Windows XP have gone currput and are not accesible anymore.

Did you install the drivers? Necessary if using a PCI card.

I tried them, but they don't allow the installation to proceed unless it's
verified. Apparently, their validation server is down, and, being Memorial
Day weekend, I didn't expect it to be rebooted anytime soon. I found a way
to get everything working, though.

out of curiosity how did you fix it so I know in case I have to do this
again in the future.
