New profile automatically created

I have an XP machine (have seen this on 2000 also). A user could be using
the machine for months with no problems. One day they go to log in and a new
profile is created, such as USERNAME.COMPUTERNAME. Of course all the
settings are now the default settings and their original profile is no longer
read. Has anyone run into this before and do you have any idea what's
causing it? Thanks in advance for any help.

It's fairly common and it means that the user profile has become corrupted.
This can be caused by malware, but often is a sign of failing hardware such
as the hard drive and/or the RAM. There is no way for anyone who can't see
the machine to tell what the cause is. Look in Event Viewer for clues, scan
for malware, do some hardware troubleshooting.

I'm IT for a school district and I've seen it happen here too many times to
be caused by the things that you mention, besides the fact that it just
occured on a clean install of XP. I've never been able to find the cause,
but this clean install was the "last straw".

Hi Jeff,

I've seen USERNAME.DOMAIN created, but not your example. And usually
the reason for that is the first profile created had the same name as
the one for the domain.

That's because it is only a local profile, so computername is used where
you are used to seeing the ".DOMAIN"

Thanks John, you've shed some light on an issue I've been dealing with for
quite awhile.
