There's a new Pricelessware website at
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org

The webmaster is Susan Bugher and the backup webmaster is
Burnr.

For anyone wanting create a mirror site: Dszady can answer most
questions about creating a mirror site and Susan will help with that
too as soon as she gets the pricelesswarehome.org web pages updated.

""The best of the best in Windows © Freeware,
as determined by the readers of alt.comp.freeware""

Shouldn't that read - as selected by SOME of the readers??

Why ? The site seems to show the same programmes and categories as
were voted on last year.

Please do not confuse an argument about where the results of these
votes are hosted and displayed on the web, with the voting process or
results themselves.

Sure, not everyone votes, but everyone has the opportunity to do so.

cheers

I don't think there has been a time when all readers have stated a
preference or cast a vote. So yes.

I think that you are really referring to the fork in the road though?

It looks like there will be two sites and possibly more. The main
thing is that we all really enjoy freeware and the discussion of it.
That's why we all come here. Feel free to visit all sites, or choose
the one that you like the best.

We really don't need to get into another large discussion about the
sites that tally reader input. These threads were of little merit and
sharply polarized the group.

There were six of us who chipped in to fund this new site to get it up
and going. The plan is to accept donations so that this site is ACF
member owned and to operate in a democratic manner as to projects,
content, etc.

If anyone wants to contribute you can email me by removing "REM"
from my address. Include your handle and your contribution will be
confirmed in a listmail to all. One US dollar, or the rough equivalent
in whatever currency in a card can be snail mailed. I'll email my
snail mail address.

Regardless of which site(s) you personally back, let's try to
concentrate on identifying the programs that should make the 2005 list
and any previous programs that might have changed as to ware type,
rather than bog down in another emotional debate. Let's make 2005
another great year!

This may be jumping the gun more than somewhat, but one of you may be able
to give me an answer -probably Susan.
Assuming (dangerous) that there will be a Pricelessware 2005 CD, how much
of its content will be a duplication of the content of the 2004 CD? There
seems to me to be little point in compiling another 600Mb of stuff onto a
CD for distribution if, say, 400Mb of it was also on the previous one.

Regards,
Nicolaas.

Distribution site for 2004 Pricelessware CD.
E-Mail me for details. (e-mail address removed)

Hi Nicolaas,

Programs are *often* carried over from previous years but typically the
version is different. IIRC there are only 4 or 5 "last freeware version"
PW selections this year.

ISTM that if the group decides to create a PW2005 CD there would be
little or no duplication of the content that's on the PW2004 CD.

Why duplicate a site and cause confusion ? There is nothing wrong with
Garrett doing the "original" AND "official" www.priclessware.org but Susan
seems to think so 'cause it ain't her doing it anymore.

Votes in an un moderated group have no substance and no meaning therefore
are worth nothing; besides, I've seen better freeware posted here than whats
on the pricelessware list (but that's just one persons opinion).

These threads about PW (or PL - which ever side you are on) are not only
lame but defeat the purpose and spirit of acf; Now, lets get back to some
posting freeware (actually I prefer flooding acf with freeware links just to
drown out these damn useless threads).......

I'd have no problem with offering both a full CD, for someone who didn't
get the 2004 version, or an "update" CD, for those that did get the 2004
CD.

Filtering out posts that have 'pricelessware' or '[PL]' in the
Subject should help you avoid the stuff you claim is worthless and
lame.

Of course, you'd need to remember to put such a string in the Subject
of each new thread you start about it, in order to avoid annoying
yourself. ;)

Agreed. Seeing all the freeware threads lately was a refreshing snap
back to reality and a testament to the group (many newsgroups never
recover from these kinds of fights).

Doesn't this negate the whole idea of freeware tho? ;-)

Non of the site per se are *mirror* or *official* to me,

Hi RL, I think my site should now be removed from your sig file as I made
the point I wanted to at the time and have no desire to compete with the
'big 2'. Some time soon I am going to revamp my site - it will still list
freeware, but it would be fair to say that it will not be dependant on
the Pricelessware annual voting.

Thanks.

I don't care who manages a website - thought I had made that clear

Votes in an un moderated group have no substance and no meaning therefore
are worth nothing; besides, I've seen better freeware posted here than whats
on the pricelessware list (but that's just one persons opinion).

The group agrees on someone it trusts to count votes - no-one has yet
said they do not trust current or past people who did this - but it is
separate from who hosts or manages any website
These threads about PW (or PL - which ever side you are on) are not only

posting freeware (actually I prefer flooding acf with freeware links just to

so why contribute to the debate then - why not do as tramp does = post
links and reviews, rather than your views on what *I* view as an
important matter.

If not important to you, then don't post :)
