I have a new PC. I want to install a 200 GB HD. There is no 40 pin connection
available on the motherboard, but there is a serial cable that runs from the
mother board to the DVD-R with an open 40 pin conection Can I attach the HD
to this cable? If so what what would the jumper settings be?

I assume this is an IDE cable. Yes, attach your HD as cable select (if the
DVD-R is cable select). Make sure that drive is AUTO in the BIOS otherwise
it will be pio instead of dma.

STOP!
You need to make sure that that cable is an 80 conductor IDE ATA133
cable. Most CDROMS and DVDROMS etc. only need 40 conductor cables good
for IDE ATA66 speeds. There is a difference!

Correction:
You will want to use the cable supplied with the drive.
