Sudden shut down in XP PRO

Check the DMA settings in the BIOS (see how to link). If DMA is enabled,
disable it or viceversa and try to boot the computer... if it doesn't help,
check the HD digital IDE cable... check that the connector is seated firmly.
If it is a 40 pin, replace it with an 80 pin cable and enable revert the DMA
setting in the BIOS (you can count the cable strands [40 or 80] or see the
comparative image, the 40 pin has 40 coarse strands and the 80 pin is much
smoother.. they may have a printed 40/80 number). Also check for dust in
critical areas.

When you restart your computer or upgrade to Windows XP, you receive the

After sudden shutdown, computer rebooted to a blue screen indicating windows
wouldn't start.
UNMOUNTABLE- BOOT DRIVE-DISK

Suggested fix was reboot in safe mode.
Tried every variety of safe mode & ended up with same old blue screen.

Is there a fix for this & can I connect hard drive to another computer to
extract data safely?
