Hello everyone,

I bought a computer a couple of years ago with a P4S533-MX motherboard
and a 1.8GHz Celeron processor. Recently I ordered a 2.4GHz P4
processor as an upgrade.

Unfortunately when I put the new processor in my computer the thing
just looks dead. There is no signal going to the monitor. No beeps or
anything. The processor must be doing something cause the thermal paste
has melted somewhat.

If I put the old processor back in everything works as before.

I even installed an upgrade of my BIOS to work with new P4 processors
but I still get the same problem.

I am very concerned that my new processor may have been a wasted
purchase.

I don't know if my new processor is a dud or if there is some problem
with the setup of the motherboard. Is there any way I can test this?

I have had problems with my motherboard since the start where it has on
occassion started up with a blank screen but when I restarted went to
BIOS and told me my cpu speed settings were wrong on the previous start
up.

Is there anything I can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael.

Are you sure you bought the right processor family ?

The listing for the P4S533-MX shows what could be Willamette (0.18u) or
Northwood (0.13u) processors. Prescott or "Celeron D" 90nm processors
use lower voltages and judging by the cpusupport listing, aren't
likely to work. The majority of processors in the retail channel will
be Prescotts, the ones you don't want (that means your search will
be a lot harder).

A 0.18u processor (1.75 volt Vcore) ...

A 2.4GHz FSB533 processor (1.5 volt Vcore) likely to work:

A 2.4GHz FSB533 processor (1.29-1.4 volt Vcore) not likely to work:

The Prescott processors are also the ones with the bigger L2 cache.

I think this is the one you want (assuming 2.4Ghz/FSB533):
