When I first turned on my computer, it asked me to name the computer, and
said that i could always rename it once setup was complete. Instead of
giving it no name, I gave it a really foul and embarassing name. Now that
it is displayed on th bottom of the screen, I need to change it, bu cannot
for the life of me figure out how. It is probably so easy that I keep
overlooking it. Please help.

start>run and type

sysdm.cpl

Computer Name>Click the Change button.

Not to hard :)

What you do is first click start,
then you Right click on My Computer, and select properties, This will
bring up the System Properties dialog box.

Once you're there you'll see a tab labeled "Computer Name" click it and
there will be a textbox for the description, But that isn't the name,
click on the button "Change..." and it will bring up a dialog where you
can change it. after you've changed it just press ok on the two windows
and you're done.
