New motherboard wont boot windows xp

T

Tex Tech

I am upgrading a AMD 1.4 Aus system to an AMD64 cpu with Gigabyte K8NS
Pro motherboard.

I am reusing the 2 IDE drives(windows XP already installed)NON-raid, 1
DVD RW and CDRom. All plugs and cables are correctly connected.
Windows XP worked fine 1 hour before board swap.

Boot starts OK. It shows the IDE devices listed correctly, but gets to
a gigaraid screen and says "doing IDE scan" and then it finds zero
devices and cant boot Windows XP.

Drives have power and i can see their access lites some on when i do
certain things in bios settings.

I figure it is configured as a raid system by default? And I need to
reconfigure the board in some way, but I cannot find anything in the
manual or online on how to fix this. Tried various things in bios
configure menus but nothing works.

Anyone familiar with this mboard? Any suggestions?

Hello

You just can't take a harddrive with your OS and put it
with a different mother, does not work that way. The first
you should be doing is backing up your data and right
you will have some issue. Sometimes it's better to think
before you act. But you should consider doing a clean install
instead of looking for a short-cut.

Do a repair install so the proper drivers for his new CPU are installed.

So you have decided to do a heart, lung and liver transplant.

Did you do anything to prepare your patient for the shock and minimise any
risk of death on the operating table? From what you've written, it would
appear that you really didn't understand just where you were going.

Fisrt thing is to take this and make one small step at a time.

You need to ensure that all the Drives [HDD, CD, DVD etc] are conbfigured
exactly the same on the new MOBO as the Old. Work out which was the:

Primary Master
Primary Slave
Secondary Master
Secondary Slave

Now connect only the primary master [IDE Hard Drive with Windows XP] and one
Optical drive.

Get to BIOS and make sure all settings are correct for CPU, Memory, FSB, etc
etc.

Now attempt to run an IDE device detetction.

If you see the Primary Master, then you have a good chance of booting up to
an operating system.

Given that you didn't do a backup before, it just may be too late: however
you will need to run a repair installation to set Windows to the new
environment.

Repair Install to SET XP to New Motherboard
1.Do Not BOOT into Windows XP on first boot after Motherboard or Hard Drive
change!
2.If your computer does not support booting from the CD, check your OEM or
Motherboard makers web site for updated BIOS.
3.Perform a Repair Install by following the step by step below.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to
start the repair.

After Windows is working properly, then add in you extra devices One at a
time. This avoids any conflicts and confusion as to what drivers etc you
need to install.

.

Switch the ide controllers to the standard MS ide
controller then plug it to your new machine - should work
have done for me in the past, but dont be surprised if
your machine keeps crashing

Alvin Brown has the right solution. You *must* do a Repair Install of
Windows XP if you change the motherboard.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for detailed
instructions.

The Repair Install will preserve your installed applications, user
data files, and program configuration settings. However all Windows
Updates will have to be installed again.

Good luck

For anyone else with this problem, heres the solution:

1. turn off both raids in bios menus
2. in bios change CDROM to make it come before hddisk in boot sequence
3. reboot with Windows cd in cdrom
4. Do a REPAIR INSTALL of windows
5. reinstall all drivers as needed

thanks gentlemen

p.s. why did you assume I never did a backup?
