New IE6 SP1 Install causes problems

I recently installed IE6 SP1 on my Windows 98 SE. I now have instances where
certain links on some web pages don't work. e.g. From my bank's home page I
can't get onto the login page. On another site I couldn't access a job
application form page. Also, links in my emails in Outlook Express don't work
now. They open an IE window with a tool bar but no (or invisible) content.
And the window stays like that; won't load and no error message, etc.

Tried installing a couple updates/patches to no avail.

No viruses, etc. When using Mozilla Firefox I have none of the above problems.

Can anyone help here?
