New IDE drive installed...SATA drives not detected...

My computer crashed this morning (not the first time i've had this problem),
and I came to the conclusion that I needed to buy a new hard drive to prevent
losing the data on my primary drive. The drive that crashed was a SATA drive
set to CABLE SELECT....with another SATA drive set to CABLE SELECT.

My new drive is an IDE drive set to CABLE SELECT as well. When I installed
Windows XP on the IDE drive, I turned off my computer and connected my 2 SATA
drives. When I tried to restart, I received the error when the SATA drive
crashed. So, I disconnected the SATA drives and tried getting one to show up
as a SLAVE, but still no luck.

I need to access the data on my SATA drives, but I'm not sure how to get
them detected, or what settings should be on each drive (ie CABLE SELECT,
MASTER, SLAVE).

If you could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

Last time I checked SATA drives had no option for Master/Slave/Cable Select.
(At least mine do not.) There was only a skinny cable from the motherboard
to the drive. SATA drives, by their nature of not being able to change from
Master to Slave therefore cannot be set as Slave they are always Master in
the BIOS.

IDE drives can be set as Master (when on the end), Slave (when in the
middle ), and CS. Western Digital drives should not be jumpered for any
setting if they are the only drive on the IDE cable.

Mike:
As you will soon hear, your present SATA HDs, both "crashed" and
non-crashed, are not configured on a Master/Slave/Cable Select basis since
they are not connected on an IDE channel. Simply stated, there's no such
thing as M/S/CS when referring to a SATA HD. The SATA drives are, of course,
simply connected to one or another of your motherboard's SATA connectors.
(I'm assuming you're not using a SATA controller card).

We'll assume you've correctly installed the XP OS on your new PATA (IDE) HD,
and after disconnecting both of your SATA HDs, the system boots without
incident and is perfectly functional. Is that correct?

Why don't you now connect one of your SATA HDs (forgetting about that M/S/CS
business, of course) and access your BIOS to ensure that your PATA HD is
first in the boot order. After you boot, are you able to access your SATA
HD?

Then do the same thing with your other SATA HD. Assuming the "first" SATA HD
was able to be accessed without a problem, you can simply connect the second
one while the first one is connected. Now, can you access all your HDs?

You indicated that one of your SATA HDs originally "crashed". Is it possible
that's a defective HD? Or was this a problem with system file corruption of
one sort or another? Think it might be wise to check out that "crashed" HD
with the diagnostic utility you can obtain from the drive's manufacturer?

I now realize that SATA drives don't have the master, slave, cable select
options...i didn't see any letters indicating such above the pins on the
drive, so I just configured it the same way as a IDE hard drive (meaning that
I put the white stopper on the same pins that an IDE hard drive would be set
to for a slave configuration)

I have 2 SATA connectors on my motherboard.

The system works fine when both SATA drive are unplugged. All my drives (2
SATA and 1 IDE were all positioned with the white stopped on the farthest
right pins).

I'll attempt to enter the RAID utility and change the bootup order and see
what happens.

I'm wondering if I should take all the WHITE pins out if this boot order
rearrangement doesn't work???

Yes, Mike, those "white stoppers" as you call them are probably the problem
here. I take it you're referring to what's commonly called "jumpers".
Ordinarily (with VERY rare exceptions) SATA HDs are installed "jumperless",
or if they are jumpered by the factory, they are not to be moved. So check
that out without delay, OK?

Anna,

I went into the BIOS and changed my BOOT setup. I now have my IDE hard drive
set as the first hard drive to boot. My IDE hard drive and my SATA hard drive
are both connected with the "jumpers" positioned at the farthest pins to the
right.

So, Windows started fine since the IDE hard drive is booting first....

..........but the SATA drive is still not being detected......so i'm not sure
where to go from here.

I got it working!

I had to reinstall my SATA drivers once again. The SATA drive is now being
detected as a secondary drive to my IDE drive as the primary!

Thanks for all your help and support!
