Installing an SATA drive

Hey all,

I have a new 500gb SATA hard drive that I want to install as a storage
drive. Here is my current setup:

I have two IDE drives on IDE 1...one drive is set to master and is my
c: drive. The second is set to slave and is my f: drive.

I have two CDR/DVDR drives on IDE 2...one drive is set to master and is
my d: drive. The second is set to slave and is my e: drive.

My mobo is an ECS P4M800PRO-M which has two SATA connectors on the
board.

I opened the computer and conneted the new SATA drive to the SATA
connector 1 and booted my computer. The bios recognizes my drive as
3rd master now.

The problem I am having is this...Windows XP now sees the new SATA
drive as c: and wants to boot to it. I want to keep my current set up
as specified above and just add the SATA drive as another storage
drive.

Also, if I restart my computer and press F8 I can boot into my IDE
master c: which is what i want it to do. However, when I am logged
into windows, the new SATA drive has a drive letter of g:

How do I get windows to boot normally with my current setup and have it
recognize my new SATA drive as a storge drive?

Thanks!
Patrick

Go into the BIOS setup of your computer and look for the Boot Priority
settings. There should be an option there to put the IDE drive(s)
ahead of the SATA drive in boot priority.

If not, check with the your motherboard manufacturer's tech support to
see how to get this configured properly.

Good luck

I had the same problem a couple of days ago. Follow the recommendation of
the previous post however if the boot sequence does not 'stick' (mine kept
defaulting to SATA drive even though I was choosing the IDE drive what you
need to do is actually disable the SATA as a boot drive. In the BIOS there
is a setting about hard drives (not the auto detection) where you can do
this My MB is ASUS and there is a sub-setting under the boot sequence where
it shows the hard drives. What you need to do is go there and disable the
SATA drive. After I did that computer booted normally then I went to my
computer/manage/disk management and formatted and assigned a letter on the
new drive.
Hope this helps you.
