New hijacker

Guest

Hi,
My home page is hijacked. I used SmitfraudFix as per other posts to clean
it in both safe & normal mode. The infected home page is cleaned and the
home page is now reset to the default msn page. However, the msn page cannot
be changed either. The msn page becomes the new hijacker. Even if I lower
the privacy and security level to low but still no help. How do I fix this?

Thanks
Ken

Ken,

The malware *may* have changed Permissions needed to change the Home
page. You can use the registry editor to reset the Permissions.
Go to Start, Run, type in
regedit
Click OK
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Click the plus sign next to Internet Explorer
Right click the Main folder and choose Permissions.
If your User Account has Administrator permissions, then ensure that
Administrators has the Full Control and Read boxes checked.
Click Apply, OK.
( IF you cannot check the permissions for the Main folder, then right
click Internet Explorer and check the permissions there first. )
Close the registry editor.

Now open Internet Options in the Control Panel.
Can you change the Home page setting now ?

I open the Registry, the Administrator is already checked with Read & Full
control. I even grant any users to full control but does not work yet.

Ken,

Check the Value of these subkeys :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
In the right frame, look for Start Page.
Double click it and change the Value to the URL you desire.
EX: If you want the home page to be Google, type in
http://google.com

Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Once again, in the right frame look for Start Page and set it to the
site you desire.
Close the registry editor when done.

Is there a 3rd party program installed that restricts the changing of
the Home Page ?

I don't find the start page. It is weird that when I change the wallpaper
from None to one of the selections Windows, it lets me change. Then I change
the home page and it also lets me change. I don't think changing the
wallpaper has anything to do with fixing the problem. However, the problem
has been resolved for no ideas.

Thanks a lot.
