CoolWebSearch Hijack

R

Rob C

I'm a victim of the "CoolWebSearch" hijack which takes
over Internet Explorer and keeps resetting my home page
even after I've cleaned my computer with "hijack killing
software"

Has anyone experienced this problem and found the sure
solution.

I've been using "CWS Shredder" which removes a corrupt
dll file each time the problems reoccurs but the hijack
takes place sometimes within hours, if not minutes of
having removed it again.

I found a solution, thanks to the technicians at McAfee (I use their virus scan software and keep it updated). Finding the solution took quite a while, but it worked and I am CoolWeb-free on all three users on my computer :) Hope my experience can help you

McAfee had me download a special virus scan software that runs from DOS (I had to start my Windows to run with the command prompt)

McAfee VirusScan for Win32 v4.32.
Copyright (c) 1992-2003 Networks Associates Technology Inc. All rights reserved
(408) 988-3832 LICENSED COPY - Nov 10 200

Scan engine v4.3.20 for Win32
Virus data file v4100 created Apr 05 200
Scanning for 89910 viruses, trojans and variants

The scan itself took about 2.5 hours, but it was well worth it -- it found the trojans that were causing the problem. I asked why these didn't show up during McAfee's regular virus scan, and was told that these trojans had infected files that had to do with Windows and weren't scanned during a "standard" scan

If you have McAfee, use their live technician support to get you to this software download -- it worked great! If you have some other virus scanning software, ask about additional downloads for deeper scanning. It may be worth the $29 to get the McAfee on-line . .

Good Luck

Me Too

I've tried adaware spybot xoftspy these are spy / adware
killers but they are show up different results do
microsoft endorse any spyware / malware cleaning
software ?

Thanks

PS I also used the shredder and it says it cleared it but
then when i ran xofypsy it was still there - so much for
that . (How do we know these are not sponsoring it in the
first place as they are the one who make money from
selling software - which is why i have asked if
miscrosoft endorses anty such products as i believe only
the big names can be trusted - hopefully!)

Download "hijackthis" scan your system with it, copy the
scan results with notepad and post those results at the
spywareinfo forums.Mike and the other volunters there
have a vendetta against coolweb,Last month Spywareinfo
and several other "anti-spyware" sites were the victims
of a denial of service attack it is believed that coolweb
was behind it.This just shows how effective these guys
are at removing it.
