New HD, copy win2000

Hi,
I have a new Hard Drive to replace a failing one on my 2nd machine,
which has win2000 on the 2nd partition. If I setup the new HD as
primary, partition it like the old HD, can I just copy across the
win2000 system from the old HD so that it will work without having to do
anything?
I've never done this with win2000 before so that is why I am asking

Thanks

Yes, you can do it using XXCLONE:

http://www.xxclone.com/

It can create a bootable clone. The way I do it using a second drive
cable is to connect the target drive as a secondary master (maybe
not necessary but I'm just describing what I've done). To check it
out, I pull the cable from the primary drive (power off, of course)
and allow the system to boot from the secondary master. Works like
a charm :) You may need to set your BIOS to insure that it will
boot from the secondary master when it can't boot from the
primary (to run the test).

You need cloning software to do this....I personally quite like Acronis
TrueImage (better than Ghost, in my opinion) and it isn't expensive.
