I've bought a larger hard drive for my daughter's
computer. Can I install the new drive as a slave and in
dos copy the Windows XP operating system from the small
drive to the large drive? Or do I have to perform a clean
install and re-activate?
Same motherboard, CPU etc. just a new hard drive.

You cannot Dos copy WinXP over to the new drive, But you can create an
image of the old drive and
move the image to the new. You need Drive Image , Ghost or Acronis True
Image all third party software
that will cost you. So, best to do a clean install on new drive and once
that's accomplished you can connect the old drive as slave and move any
important files over.

Even imaging may have problems as the harddisk has changed (right?).
There is however a neat utility on your Windows XP CD. On the autorun
menu, click additional options and use the File and Settings Transfer
(or something like that). Use this wizard to backup your data and also
to put it all back on

If you have bought a retail pack version of your new hard drive the
necessary software and instructions to transfer a working system to a new
hard drive should be included. If not you can download what you need from
the HDD manufacturer's web site. It worked for me.

Wow! Thanks a million Richard! I followed your advice and visited the Maxtor
site and there were loads of interesting explanations on there - including a
full (40 page PDF) Hard Drive installation guide AND a free download to make
a MaxBlast bootable floppy or CD, which appears to make it a doddle to
install and partition your new hard drive! You can also use it to copy your
OS from your old drive to your new drive! Excellent! Just what I was looking
for! Thanks again.
