I currently have 2 harddrives, my origonal c:/ drive and an added f:/ drive
that is a slave drive for the c:/ drive. my c:/ drive is old and infested
with viruses, spyware, adware, and all other sorts of "junk" that I cant get
ride of no matter what program I use ( its gotten to the point where i can no
longer buy things online on secure pages). My question is when I take out the
old c:/ drive and replace it with the new one sould I leave the f:/ drive
disconnected while I install windows on the new drive and then hook it up
after windows is finished intalling? Since it is already formatted for
windows will I need to reformat it for the new drive and lose all my
information on the f:/ drive in the process?

Remove any plug-ins that are connected before the xp install, otherwise you
might/will need to reinstall xp after it failed.

I recommend you do this:
1. Remove the old drive.
2. Install the new drive as the primary master.
3. Install Windows.
4. Install a virus scanner.
5. Install a firewall.
6. Install a spyware killer.
7. Connect the old drive as a slave drive.

The new installation of WinXP will not only be free of viruses
but it will also stay so. You can now copy your old files from
the old disk before you finally format the old disk.

Hi Pegasus,

Assuming he partitions his new drive into a C: and D: partition, now the
master drive and his old drive is already partitioned into a C: and D:
partition but now slave, will this cause a problem with two C: drives and two
D: Drives. This is my dilema right now. I have some files on the old HD
that I would like to copy over to the new HD before I format the old and
rename it to something other than C or D.

I hope I didn't confuse you.

Darrell

The new drive will be C and D.
If you connect the old drive Windows will assign different drive letters.
Windows will not assign the same drive letter twice.

Thanks Ron for your response. One other question, when I install the old
hard drive as slave, can I format it and remove the partitions with the
Windows XP CD?

Darrell

Windows won't allow you to have two drives with the same
drive letter - it will assign different letters. If you don't like
them then you can change them by running diskmgmt.msc
from the Start/Run box.

Once you have XP iunstalled on the NEW HDD and connect the old drive as
slave, you can move/copy/reformat from within XP.
No need to use the XP CD for that.

Thank you.

I forgot to ask, when I format the old drive (slave) within XP will the C:
and D: partition be removed ?
