NEW FILE (context menu handlers)

G

Guest

When I right-click on the desktop, ==> New ==> I get a bunch of
options for opening a new file. I want most of them OUT of there!
I've tried looking in the registry for the correct contextmenuhandlers
to kill, but I've found too many. I'm afraid to delete them.

Where do I find the context menu handlers for NEW Files? Can I just
delete the keys when I find them, or should I do something else.

Is there a different program to do registry edits, that would allow me
to color-code the keys so I can find my place again? Is there a
program that would let me find just the context menu handlers?

Thank you.

You should be aware that some applications automatically add the new-file template for their filetype whenever they are run, so you
will have to keep removing it every time you run the program.

Unfortunately, the new-file template system is decentralized (there is no one location that holds it all) so the entries that make
it up are spread out, which makes it a pain to maintain/force/backup/restore.

I'm trying to add New HTML doc to the "New" submenu, preferably
using Nvu as editor. Tweak UI adds my HTML template to its menu,
does not ask for the program to use anyplace I can find. Thing
is, it retains the item on booting but it never appears in the New
menu.

The original post is pretty old, but I finally found an answer.
Anybody want it?

OK. The Firefox installer changes the default value for the .htm and
..html keys in HKCR from "htmlfile" to "FirefoxHTML". If you change it
back to "htmlfile" and go massage the keys under "htmlfile" so that
Firefox still opens those files by default, "HTML File" will show up
on the New context menu again.

This is emphatically *not* for the fainthearted. Back up your
registry before trying it, use seatbelts, brush and floss after every
meal, etc., etc.

I will leave it to others to meditate upon why changing virtually any
other filetype has no effect on ShellNew, while changing from a
filetype that's opened by MSIE to a filetype that's named after a
competing browser should have the effect of annoyingly reducing
functionality.

Alas, while I like conspiracy theories as much as the next guy, the
truth is probably that there are now so many layers of abstraction,
overwrites, and cut-outs between the filetype and the command going
to the application that nobody knows how it works any more.

Btw, I've used Nvu and liked it pretty well, but in the end I decided
the developer(s?) had gone to sleep again, so I settled on Amaya for
slamming in text and good old Top Style Pro for everything else.
