New Drive won't boot up

Hi,

I recently posted that I got a new Seagate Barracuda with external enclosure
that I plan to use for my boot drive. I also bought a pci card with external
sata ports. The card and drive show up where they need to. I went into BIOS
and selected this new drive to be my boot drive. When I restarted my computer
however, I got an error message saying "please reboot and select proper boot
device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key." I am
confused now. Everything is properly recognized in BIOS so why am I getting
this message?

Neither Windows XP or Vista can be booted from an external drive. Sorry.

Hi,

Here are the steps I followed on my sony vaio vgc-ra830g. This was on the
sony site. Restart the computer.
At the SONY screen, press the F2 button.
In the BIOS SETUP UTILITY window, press the RIGHT ARROW key until Boot is
selected.
In the Boot Settings window, press the DOWN ARROW key until Hard Disk Drives
is selected.
Press the ENTER key.
In the Hard Disk Drives window, with 1st Drive selected, press the ENTER key.
In the Options window, press the ARROW keys until the hard drive to use as
the 1st Drive is selected.
Press the ENTER key.
Repeat the preceeding steps until all desired changes to the Hard Disk
Drives window have been made.
Press the ESCAPE key to return to the Boot Settings window.
In the BIOS SETUP UTILITY window, press the RIGHT ARROW key until Exit is
selected.
Press the ENTER key twice. So, I chose the new external drive as my boot
drive.

Be real here. The O/P is specifically mentioned an external Seagate drive in
the Seagate enclosure. They are USB interface. What the O/P is referring to
will not happen.

What you are referring to is basically a internal drive connected to an
internal bus and mounted externally.

I can physically remove an IDE hard drive, place it on the desk next to my
tower, and claim to be booting from an external drive. If I want to make an
interface, and cut and mount it physically into the metal of the tower, I
can now plug the IDE drive into the interface. It's still not an external
drive. It's an internal drive, connected to an internal bus, used
externally.

Unless there is some kind of operating system installed on this new
Seagate drive, it won't boot.
