New domain question

We are about to create a new corporate domain and move about 7 other domains
to that new domain. My question is this: we have a parent, child domain here
and I have 6 dc's, 4 in the parent domain and two in the child domain, there
are only two DNS servers running in the parent domain.

1. I would like to demote at least one DCmaybe two (the ones without DNS)
prior to running ADMT is this a good idea? I want to make the move easier

2. Is it a good practice not to run DNS on the dc's in the child domain?
These are Windows 2000 servers.

3. Should I upgrade to Windows 2003 now? One server in the child domain
can't be upgraded.

Thanks for any help.

John

3. Would upgrading them to Windows 2003 be a good idea, one can't be upgraded

This is likely to affect the move much one way or the
other.
2. Is it a good practice not to run DNS on the dc's in the child domain?

No, not particularly. Generally the DNS is BEST placed on
the DCs so if there is a "good practice" here at all you have
it reversed.
These are Windows 2000 servers.

Win2000 DNS is excellent -- Win2003 is ever better, especially
for multi-domain AD forests.

Depends on where you want to end up -- if you are going
to be using Win2003, you might as well do it now unless
something stops you.

Migration and consolidation of domains isn't particularly
related to the Win2000-Win2003 upgrade EXCEPT that
if you can upgrade ALL of the DCs in the entire forest then
you may be able to rename your domains.

Maybe some of this would be a better path to your final
goal....

Hi, first of all thanks for your responses, I did not initially set up the
domains. It is a good practice to run DNS on the child domain dc's? I was
thinking it was too but wanted to verify that here. It has been a long time
since I have dealt with a parent child domain.

My parent domain has 4 domain controllers and they are running DNS on two of
them. I think I will demote the other two since 4 is overkill and out DNS on
the child domain DC's. That should make things run a little smoother.

Thanks

Parent DNS must delegate to the child, then the DNS servers in the child
domain must have a way to resolve the parent -- in Win2000 this method
is usually for the child DNS server to hold a secondary for the parent zone.

Note: We speak of "child DNS servers" as if that has meaning, but the
truth is that any DNS server can (technically) hold any zone -- so we
commonly put both parent and child (and siblings sometimes) on what
we THINK of as the "child DNS" servers.
My parent domain has 4 domain controllers and they are running DNS on two of
them. I think I will demote the other two since 4 is overkill and out DNS on
the child domain DC's.

If you don't have a lot of clients but if the DC is causing you
no problems you might just leave it be.
That should make things run a little smoother.

Why?
