New CPU, same motherboard?

I have an Asus P4PE motherboard and can apparently replace my Pentium 4 with
one that supports hyperthreading.

What will this do to Windows XP already installed on that computer? Will it
disrupt it? Also, will I be able to use hyperthreadign even though Windows
XP was installed without it?

Finally: Is hyperthreading what I need? I often run sound and image
processing programs that slow the computer to a crawl. Will hyperthreading
allow me to still do other things while these programs are running?

hyper-threading will speed it up a bit but its designed to improve
multi-tasking, which pentiums arent the best at doing.

That's what I mean. I know the program I'm running is a single task and
won't speed up. What I want is to be able to have the computer still
respond to other things while the program is running.
