Upgrading systems, Hyperthreading

P

Perry Minyard

I just bought a new computer and instead of installing XP
from scratch, I wanted to 'move' the contents from my old
computer to my new computer. The old system did not
support hyperthreading, and the new one does.

I originally installed a fresh copy of XP on the new
system and noticed that Hyperthreading was working.

Old system: What I did: Created a restore point. Added
a 2nd hard drive to the old system, and performed an ASR
backup of my system to the 2nd hard drive.

I then took the 2nd hard drive and put it in my new
system, and installed XP pro on the new system, and then
pressed F2 to enable ASR to recover my backup. It
started off by prompting me to put in my ASR floppy disk,
then it completely formatted drive "C", installed
windows, and then began restoring the system from the 2nd
hard drive.

After it was all through, the system booted up fine, and
all I had to do was re-install a few drivers.

The problem I have now is that that hyperthreading is not
running.

Is there some registry tweek or a different version of
the kernel that I can install to make my system start to
hyperthread again?

Thanks,
Perry

Here is a bit more on the previous post:

When I look in device manager, it shows 2 processors, so
I presume the system is aware of the hyperthreading
capability, but when I pull up task manager, it only
shows one CPU, and doesnt give me the option to show 2
graphs, like it usually does on a machine that has
hyperthreading 'enabled'.

The hyperthreading option is enabled in my bios.

One more tidbit of info:

When I look at the device manager, it shows the Advanced
Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC as the driver
for my computer, but the driver name
is 'C:\windows\system32\hal.dll". Shouldn't it be named
halacpi.dll instead? I've done some research since my
original post. Should I just perform an reinstallation
of windows, and press F6 as it's installing and specify
the ACPI hal instead?

The system appears to be aware of the two processors, but
the main thing is that it doesnt show two processors in
the task manager, so I'm not sure if it's really
hyperthreading or not.

see if this helps.
in task manager-performance hit view then cpu history. make sue one graph
per cpu is checked.

as far as driver for pc mine also uses sys32/hal.dll and HT works on mine.
don't think thats the issue.
what is the chipset and motherboard on the new pc? I am wondering if it is
an outdated bios issue.
have you tried disabling in bios, start pc then reboot. during reboot enable
HT again to see if it works correctly then. probably not the issue since
device manager shows 2.
the only other thing I can think of is to boot to the xp install disk and do
a repair install to see if that corrects it.
