new computer... now problems

I just bought a brand new computer a month ago, it was
build by a reliable computer shop. I am having problems
with the computer always stalling and freezing. I have XP
as the operation system. What can I do myself without
having to take it in and have to pay 150.00 to have it
looked at or repaired.

If it's a brand new computer it's under guarantee. Take it back and get
them to fix it. You pay for the guarantee when you purchase anything. Take
advantage of it.

If it is "build by a reliable computer shop", they will be glad to
help you solve your problem.
Otherwise they are not as reliable as you suggest.

Start by power off, opening the case.
Reseat every cable and card.
