Good morning to you all!

We have a relative new lab top (DELL) and the problem is
the network connection is intermittently lost ever 20
seconds. The computer is using a DHCP server to get the
IP information, DNS, Wins, Gateway, etc. When I use the
ping command with the -t attribute every twenty times we
loss a connection and than the connection is reestablish
and after 20 pings we loss the connection again and so
on. When I disable DHCP and I provide the IP information
manually I have not problems. I do not understand what
is going on. I tried with a wireless card and the same
problem continues. The DHCP server is a Windows NT 40
server.

This computer belongs to my boss and it is very important
for me to fix this issue once and for all. Any help
provided will be very appreciated.

Thank you in advance for all you help!

Something to do with authentication on either the laptop or the server,
probably the latter since it is a new installation?

Q

Thank you for your comment.

The connection was working fine for over six months. The
connection is not new. Question: What kind of security
does it need to get information from the DHCP? My
understanding is none? Is that right? You computer does
not need to be part of the domain nor log in with a
username and password. Please advise.

Thank yuo!

Issuing an IP address, by a DHCP server, occurs at the Network layer (IP being
the network protocol). The domain, specifically domain in File and Printer
Sharing for Microsoft Networks, is relevant at a much higher level.

Issuing of an IP address, by DHCP, can be controlled by MAC address, which is a
Data Link attribute. Issuing of an IP address by DHCP is not, as you surmised,
controlled by domain membership.

You implied that you tried a wireless connection. Did you also try a wired
connection? Are there other computers on that subnet which are successfully
serviced by that DHCP server?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Is there a software firewall on the NT server? Some of them interpret a
string of pings as a potential DOS attack and are configured to
automatically block the IP or even the sub net of the "attacking" pc.
