new build won't game

I can surf the web or do any other 2D stuff with no problem. When I try to
play Call of Duty or Splinter Cell, the game will come up and play
anywhere
from 30 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes, then craps out. Call of Duty just
quits without warning and dumps back to the desktop, at which time I can
continue to use the pc with no problem. Splinter Cell usually causes a
spontaneous reboot. Call of Duty usually craps out faster than Splinter
Cell. This is driving me crazy because I upgraded to this setup for better
gaming!

Did you upgrade the games themselves? Halo wouldn't work on my system until
I installed an upgrade.

Also, right-click on your My Computer, choose Properties, click on the
Advanced tab, and under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. On the new
dialog, under System Failure, uncheck Automatically Restart. Your rebooting
problem with Splinter Cell should go away. However, the error causing it,
will still be there. Check for a game update that might cure it. However,
the error may not inhibit gameplay.

Here is what I have tried so far:
flashed to the latest BIOS for the motherboard
set AGP aperture to 128 and 256 in BIOS (tried at each setting)
ran with side panel open in case it is cooling issue
no overclocking of cpu or video card
got latest drivers

Windows XP Pro Service pack 1 (clean install)
Shuttle AN35 Ultra motherboard (using on board sound)
Athlon XP 2500 cpu
2 sticks of 256 mb generic PC2700 memory in slots 1 & 3 (should be dual
channel)
PNY Geforce FX 5700 ultra video card
DirectX 9.0b
350 watt power supply
Maxtor 80 gb 7200 rpm 8 mb cache hard drive

Find the "official" site for those games. This is a known problem with
Call of Duty and a lot of people are reporting this. The fix is in the
game forums. I don't have the web addresses right now but they're not
hard to find.

Update: I put in my old GF4 TI4600 and still have the problem, so it is not
card specific (could still be driver specific). I may pop the Radeon 9800
pro out of my son's pc and try it (while he ain't lookin')

I don't find any patches for Call of Duty yet. I'll keep checking. I did
install the patch for Splinter Cell. I will go ahead and install some more
games and sims (Flight Sim 2004) to see if all of them have problems.

Hey Big Daddy, I used your tip to turn off the automatic reboot. This time
when Splinter Cell crapped out, I could see the message about the error.
"The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp.dll
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" Should I try using an older driver? MC

It doesn't mean it's a drive fault, necessarily, but you can try older
drives, if you think it is. It could mean the application is making a bad
call to that dll. Dll files are just libraries that external applications
can call. I'd try upgrading the game, possibly. Then try the drivers.

What brand of generic ram? You might try and use prime95 on the
system the balanced setting will test the memory pretty good. When I
bump up the FSB to high I get the exact same error down to the same
file. Seems to be memory corruption. You might try less aggresive
memory setting or make sure you are running the memory at the right
voltage.

If you didn't have such a new motherboard, I'd suspect it's the bad
capacitor problem. Taiwan sent out a HUGE batch of bad capacitors some
years back, and lots of motherboards have run into problems. My home
computer and work computer both had the problem. The symptoms are exactly
as you describe. You can search the web for some articles on it e.g.
http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/resource/feb03/ncap.html

The isn't a patch for Call of Duty yet. But the fix is in the forum.

I took the GFFX5700 back to Circuit City and got the Radeon 9700 Pro. Put
it in and STILL HAD PROBLEMS! At this point I was ready to quit screwing
around with computers! Installed MS Flight sim 2004, yep, it crapped out
too. This time I got "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". Did a search and got a lot of
posts on the problem. The majority of them mentioned looking for IRQ shared
with video card and moving device to another slot or removing it. Sure
enough, the modem was sharing, so I just removed it since I have broadband
now. There was another suggestion about changing the arrangement of the
memory chips. For dual channel on my board you use either 1 & 3 or 2 & 3. I
changed from the latter to the former, put the cover back on and fired it
up. Held my breath and started flying the sim. No problem. Held my breath
again, and started Call of Duty. NO PROBLEMS! I learn so much new stuff
every time I build a new box. Thanks for your help again.
