Never Download from Suggest Virus Sites

You are a prime example of why I offer direct links to download those
files from my website. Those so called "trusted sites" can't be trusted.

Which in this case is moot.

The "direct" link ( http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ ) Offers two
choices of mirrors to get AdAware.

pcworld.com and downloads.com which is exactly where the OP downloaded his
allegedly "infected" copy.

His copy was not infected, the spyware already on his system was probably
triggered by visiting Download.com.Keywords in the address bar, on the site
itself , or certain cookies, is all that is needed to start a silent install
of spyware.

the MVP's, in a sense, was correct but you have seem first hand what could
happen by visiting those "Trusted sites" as Leythos likes to put it. Spyware
writers know all too well all these "trusted sites" so they target it.
Leythos does not know this and many others including the MVP's don't know
this. There is also the paid advertising on Download.com from known spyware
companies, as was mentioned before by another poster. Download.com does not
care who or what they advertise just as long as it is paid for. It is by no
means your fault. As far as your spyware problem use Ewido it is very good
and not very well known because they are new. You can get it in a direct
unmodified download from my site here

mirror. You can also get it from Softpedia another mirror but this site
claims to be 100% spyware, adware, virus free

before, he's not doing you any favors by hosting some unknown file on
his server - and you don't really know that he's linked a file to what
he claims.

Only download software you can validate as uncompromised - in the case
of non-vendor site you have no guarantee that the files are unmodified
or uncompromised. Anyone providing a link to a non-vendors site with a
direct download should not be trusted, the vendors sites are the safest
place to download their application.

Always remember - only download files from Trusted Sites.

or www.pcworld.com.

This is all a storm in a teacup anyway. I never ever had any
problems with downloads from Download.com. He got the
virus/spyware from somewhere else.

No, this is about you not being ethical, trying to sucker people into
downloading some unknown file from your personal website, etc....

While there are "Ads" on Download.com I've never experienced any issues
while "Browsing" their site and their site has never installed any
malware on my systems or the systems of anyone I know. Sure, if they
were to take an Ad from some malware vendor, without understanding what
the vendor was pushing, a user could CLICK and CHOOSE TO INSTALL
malware, but the user has to do it.

If the user accesses the vendors website they learn about the product,
can see if it's something they want to use, can read about it and
technical information, can check to see when the app was updated, and in
many cases can purchase/donate to the vendor to help them continue
producing a quality application.

Your site does nothing except try an teach people that downloading files
from some lamers personal page is a good method/practice. You don't have
a MD5 checksum to prove your offerd files are legit, you have even
hosted files you didn't and don't have permission to host, and you take
possible revenue away from vendors by not properly mirroring/hosting
those files.

When the files are available from the developer/vendor the proper method
is to teach people to download them from the developers/vendors site -
they then have a hope of getting what they are downloading.

I see you're not posting from Prodigy anymore and you are not listing
pcbutts in your links for the files.... Why, did you do something that
caused you problems doing that?

Did you really think that continuing to give links to files, not the
link to the vendors site, would go unnoticed here?

All you've been asked to do is provide the vendors link to the file, not
the link to your personal site where they can't be verified. If you were
to act in an ethical manner and post valid vendor links no one would
hassle you.

Yes, they currently direct you to those sources, but, do you feel
comfortable that it will always be hosted there with the latest version?

If you post the vendors link to the file/page the users get to learn

You violate the intellectual property rights of authors/vendors of software, willingly
violate the FAQ of News Groups by asking others to violate a News Group respective FAQ or
the wishes of the owners of a News Server, abuse posters, lie, and you steal others work

vendors works you improperly host on your website - the ones that the
vendors have posted that you don't have permission to host....

that have vendors links. Then, as a security measure, in checking your
improper hosting of those files we find that the vendors actually never
gave you permission to host them, don't want you hosting them, and have
actually taken the time to post here telling you (and the public) that
you don't have permission to host them.

I didn't find YOU in this thread, I found some lamer posting a personal
link to a vendors files that were improperly hosted - then, when I
looked at the site root I found it was you again.....

Stop doing stupid and unethical things and people like me won't take you
to task for it. Heck, you could even go back to your pcbutts1 nic and
not have any problems/hassles if you just stopped improperly hosting
files that you don't have permission to host.
