Networking

I am trying to set up a network to share files between my desktop and laptop
computers...both running Windows XP home. I am using a Netgear wireless
router. I thought this would be real easy but for some reason I can share
the internet connection but not files or printers. I have tried running the
wizard several times on both computers but still cant share files. does
anyone have any ideas on this....is there something im not doing?

Thanks

Steve

Do you have an internet security program (such as Norton
Internet Security) running on one or both of the
computers? Because they will block file and printer
sharing.

Hi Steve, In control panel in network connections , right
click go to properties, Advanced and make sure the
firewall in XP is not checked. this should enable the
computers to see each other. also on each computer to
need "share" what ever you want to share. Like right
click on the hard drive, go to sharing and security and
select what you like. hopes this helps. Steve

I have tried to share files and or printers with my internet security
completely off on both computers. The desktop computer has nothing in My
Network Places and since I have already turned on sharing for some files and
both printers...shouldn't these files and printers appear in network places
along with the laptop computer?

I just tried again to access the workgroup computers...which should show the
laptop on my network and I get the message:

"MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if
you have access permission.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I am logged on as an administrator....that's the only user log on I have.
how can I change it so that I can see the other computer on the network?

thanks
Steve

Do you have the same user ID and password defined on all computers?
Do you have client for MS windows, and file/print sharing, both tied to
tcp/ip on the network connection? Are both computers in the same
workgroup. Do they have different IP addresses on the same subnet (I
assume they will, since you say ICS works OK). DO you have the WinXP IC
Firewall turned off on both machines (I believe XP defaults it to 'on',
which kills networking stone dead).

Can each machine 'ping' the other (from a cmd box) by IP address, and by
name?

I've run a p2p network with the XP Firewall on and ICS on the host machine,
no probs. You don't need it on machines that aren't directly connected to
the internet anyway....

By user id I assume you mean user account....I have the same user account
name on both computers. I don't use any passwords to log on. I have a
client for MS windows and file/print sharing...both computers are in the
same workgroup. they do have different ip addresses as im using a router
with NAT and internet access sharing is working just fine. winxp IC
firewall is turned off on both machines.
On the laptop I if I go into view workgroup computers I can see only the
laptop...if I try to go into that command on the desktop the computer hangs
then comes back with the following message:

MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find
out if you have access permission.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I thought windows XP was so easy to use and especially in setting up a
network...I never had these kinds of problems with win98!
Any ideas of what im still doing wrong...im sure its an access problem....I
have two user accounts the one that was set up when I got the computer with
win XP loaded and a new one I created for myself both with administrator
rights and both without a password.

Thanks

Steve

You can have the XP firewall on the Internet connection, if that is a
separate NIC/connection from the general LAN (i.e. if the ICS machine
has two NICs in). What you can't do it use it on the LAN connection
which other machines are trying to access you via.
