Networking

I have set up a home ethernet network.

The comunications from computer 2 to computer 1 are OK -
Using comp.2 I can retrieve & revise files from comp.1,
save new files to comp.1 etc. ,use the internet through
the modum connected to comp.1.

Both computers share the printer which is connected to
comp.1. I can print a file opened on comp.1 through
comp.2.or comp.2.

However I can not open a file on comp.2 from comp.1.

It would appear that all the cables, cards & connections
are OK as comp.2 communicate frealy with comp.1 and
comp.2 communicates fine with comp1 when printing.

Help please.

Did you encounter any difficulties when you first set up
the network (messages, etc)?

Check your setup on comp2. and make sure you have all the
necessary options enabled to allow you to see its files on
the other computer (in the network wizard, control panel,
etc-- check things such as file sharing, etc.) Basically
make sure the same access settings that work on comp1 are
the same on comp2.

When you enter the network on comp1, are you able to see
comp2 as part of the network at all? If not, make sure
comp2 is set up on the same network and workgroup as
comp1. Also, if you use 3rd party software for your
ethernet connection, you may want to try reinstalling that
fresh.

If none of that works try setting up the network again on
the problem computer; do everything like new. If each comp
is running a different version of Windows (I'm assuming
one of them is XP), remember to set up the network on BOTH
computers using the XP CD.

one way communication often indicates a firewall problem.
It sounds as if the problem may lie with computer 2 (i.e
it can send data out but is blocking access attempts by
computer1) Turn off all firewalls whilst troubleshooting
(the inbuilt firewall on XP should be turned off anyway
on a network - this is only intended for one pc with a
direct internet connection)make sure that any third party
firewalls are also disabled/uninstalled. If this solves
the problem, you can then go back in and configure the
firewall to allow LAN traffic.

Are you running TCP/IP protocol ONLY on both systems?
Are they both XP systems, or a mix (ie. win98 & Xp,
etc..)?
Networking with more than one protocol can cause
problems. You can either make sure that the only protocol
running on both systems is TCP/IP, or you can install
NETBEUI on the XP system (assuming your setup is one XP
and one WIN98 2K, etc...). If you decide to add netbeui
for XP, Microsofts knowledgebase has instructions for
setting it up.
