Problem setting up network

Have 2 computers both XPpro each with independent adsl connections through
routers. Have installed additional LAN cards & crossover cable with the
intention of a) sharing files and printers and b) eventually sharing one
intenet connection. Comp 1 can ping comp 2 ok but can't ping itself, but does
get a good response to 127.0.0.1. Comp 2 cant see comp 1 but can ping itself
and just about anything else. I have assigned 192.168.24.2 & 192.168.24.3 to
comp 1 & 2 respectively - WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG?

When a computer can't ping itself, the problem is usually caused by a
firewall program. Un-install (don't just disable) all firewall
programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, PCCillin, Sygate, etc) on comp1
while troubleshooting. Then, go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup
and disable any firewall remnants that the un-install left behind.

I like it when someone says something so simple and it solves what looked
like a big problem in a few simple key strokes - THANKS A BUNDLE you've saved
my sanity!!
