xp file sharing problem

Hi all,
I am having some weird problem with a simple xp pro network. 2 machines connected through a wireless router, DHCP enabled, SFS enabled, I can ping both machines (ping name + ping address), I can ping the web, both machines can connect to the web (no ICS). my problem: Comp A can see and change Comp B's shared files. Comp B can see Comp A (in net-hood) but cant it's access files (msg says: "access denied....no permission..contact admin... network path not found"). Basically I have "half a network". I am logged on as admin on both machines, and all the settings for file sharing are correct.

I am logged on as admin on both machines, and all the settings for file sharing are correct.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other firewall
programs while troubleshooting. When un-installing a firewall
program, use the un-install procedure provided by the manufacturer .
Don't use Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs, which might not
completely un-install it.

For more information, see:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

thx for the quick reply. I did everything you described. the first time I ran ipconfig/all the node type was "unknown" and there were no entries in the Reg for nodeType or DhcpNodeType. So i entered a new DWORD param set to 1 (in hex) on both machines. After restart I still have the same problem but now the nodeType is "broadcast" on both machines. The next 2 entries are both "no" (ip routing enabled and wins proxy enabled) on both machines. is that o.k?

Yes, that's OK. You didn't need to do anything, because only the node
type "Peer-to-Peer" causes problems. "Unknown", "Broadcast", and
"Hybrid" are OK.
another thing I didnt do was uninstall a protocol called AEGIS 802.1x ver 2.2.1.0, it was not binded to the "microsoft clients" or "file sharing" protocols, both were binded only to TCP/IP.

I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with that protocol. I assume that
it's used to log onto a secure wireless network.
Another clue (maybe) is that when I click myNetPlaces on the desktop (the O.K part of the network) it splits the screen into 2 parts, the first is IBM Laptop which shows the shared files on the laptop and the second is labeled Unknown instead of "xpmedia" (name of desktop) , eventhough the entries below are accessable local shared folders and work fine. Even more confusing is that at the folder name it says something like "shared music on XYZ (xpmedia)" which is the name of the computer, but after that in the computer colum it again says unkown.

I've seen "Unknown", too, and it's OK.

I'm having the very same problem. I've tried enabling
NETbios over tcpip in the LAN properties, but when I set
it on enabled then check it using ipconfig/all, it comes
out as disabled. But when I check the properties again,
it's disabled.

And I don't know if it's just me, but when I ran regedit,
I couldn't find the HTM folder, but "I did find everything
that you described in a folder named HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. I
don't know if they're the same.

So is the problem fixed?

no not yet. I have a feeling it is related to permissions/users/file sharing
settings, because the computers and router can see+ping eachother. I followed
the "guru path" provided by Steve, but was unsuccessful, everything came up
normal. so I guess the network is O.K.
The weekend has already started here in Israel so I will be back debugging
So is the problem fixed?
