I recently set up a network at my house. I have one computer that just sits
in a room storing files on it that we can all share. It runs windows XP home
edition. I call it the "server" computer even though it's not really a server.

Anyway, I want to be able to make shared folders on the computer without
actually going to the computer, because then I have to plug in a monitor,
mouse, and keyboard. It's too much of a hassle.

The entire hard drive on the computer is shared. I want to make it so that I
can create a folder and then turn it into a regular shared folder. I am
willing to "hack" windows files to do this. All hidden/system files are being
shown and none of the folders on the computer are set as private folders.

Any ideas?

Hi Michael,
You can do that without the need to hack or back XP,but you need a good
Processor to do that, simply you can't leave your computer runing all the
time, will be overheated and blow up or melt, one of tow things, first you can
trun on the Computer (server) and after you presented with the GUI unplug
the Monitor and the mouse ,then leave it to run as much as you want to create
folders and files on it ,and this may which you are doing now, secondly make
the XP Home edition as a second HD on your computer by connecting it through
SCSI.
Good luck

Oh heck, must run around the town and switch off my 25 computers that have
been on for months!

Yes, that would work. However, this is a wireless network and I use a laptop
that would not always be connected.

What I'm thinking is there's probably some setting somewhere hidden in the
depths of the computer that says what folders are network folders, and what
folders are not. It might even be in the registry. However, I'm not sure
where. I want to be able to go into the file and manually edit the path of
the new folder to make it a network folder instead.

Also, is there a way to acess a remote computer's registry rather than the
registry on the computer you're using. [I only need an answer to this if this
is where shared folder location is saved]

Thanks

I found registry values in "My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares"
that contain network folder information. I tried replicating it to create a
similar copy and this failed. However, there is a subfolder named "Security".
Any ideas on how I can hack that?
