Networking -- XP and Win 98

We had a network between two computers. Previously it was a peer to peer
using Co-axial cable. This functioned well but was very slow.
We upgraded to a ethernet hub. Now each computer sees the other. The XP can
access shared folders on the "98". However, when we try to access folders on
the XP from the other we get a demand for a password. Never having had to
have a password before we are rather puzzled. If we click OK without entering
we get a password invalid message.
Where & how do we set a password so that the XP will be accessible from the
"98".
Thanks in advance.

Brendan,

Enable the Guest account for network access.

Chuck,
Went to your website, but I'm afraid mostof it is above my head. Couldn't
see whet I need.

Brendan,

OK, we'll try again. Do you want to simply access the Windows XP computer from
the Windows 98 computer, without any entering of passwords? If so, you use
Guest access.

Now, knowing whether you are running XP Home or Pro will make a big difference.
I'll first ask for that detail, before I continue.

Thanks for the interest & help. The XP is running "home".
The problem arises from the need to upgrade an application.. Currently the
application database is m.s.access based. The updrade will be SQL. The
relevant file will be bigger, and since the drive on the XP is much bigger &
faster, we felt that the XP should act as server, particularly as there will
shortly be a third computer on the network.
The present arrangement has the Win 98 acting as server.
I suppose passwords wopuld be a good idea, but since the only people with
access to the machines would also be authorised to use the database, they
wouldn't seem essential.
As yet there is no internet connection from the building, but a ASDL
connection is envisaged.

Again, many thanks

Brendan

My pleasure, Brendan.

If the XP computer is XP Home, you're reduced to Simple File Sharing and Guest
access. You CAN password protect Guest, if you like, but it will be a shared
password.

Just activate the Guest account, for file sharing across the network.

If you want to use the Windows 98 computer as the server, see this article:

Chuck, your a lifesaver. I was beginning to tear out my hair.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it sounds as if it'l solve the
problem.
We did want to use the XP as the server.
Again, thanks

Brendan,

No problem. Please let us know if it works for you that way.

Hi Chuck.
I enabled the guest account.
then I ran the activation as below:
Run the "net user" command. Enter, in a command window:
net user AccountName /active:yes

(Substitute actual account name for "AccountName").

(Substitute "no" to deactivate).

The 98 computer sees the other (previously named "OZONE" When I try to
access it, a window pops up demanding a password for "\\OZPNE\IPC$".
since no password was ever set, this mystifies me. Can't figure out what next.
Also when I do get it going I would like to password protect, but there is
no password setting in the guest account

thanks
Brendan

Brendan,

Try
net user guest /active:yes

With Simple File Sharing,
net user AccountName /active:yes
(Substitute actual account name for "AccountName") is a waste of time. With
SFS, only Guest is used for network access.

Sorry for returning once again.
Tried all that & still get a window poping up demanding a password for
"\\OZPNE\IPC$".
We have since added another computer (also XPhome) & this is also demanding
a password.
Both the XO machines can access the Win 98.

It's rapidly approaching hair-tearing-out time!!

Brendan,

I passed the hair pulling time long ago (see picture).

Run "net user guest". "Account active" = ?? Make sure the password is blank
(reset to blanks)!

Check 2 registry settings described here:
