Networking XP and 2k - Network path was not found

M

Mike Sutton

I have a home network with 1 XP Home, 1 XP Pro, and 2 2K Pro machines.
From any other PC I can see hte XP Pro PC in my Network Places, but I
cannot access the PC. When I double-Click it I get "\\<PC Name> is
not accessable. The network path was not found." Any tips on how to
resolve this or troubleshoot the problem further?

Thanks,
Mike Sutton

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and all useraccounts exist
on all computers.

Hello,

You can refer to the article below.

To workaround the issue, you can also install NetBEUI in your workgroup.

Thanks.

Thanks for the response Marina. All PCs are in the same workgroup. I
have not needed to have the same accounts on all PCs as I am usually
prompted for login info when needed, but to be safe I added an account
to all the PCs to test this and the same thing happens. I can find
the PC in network places, but when I try to open it I get the network
path not found error. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the tips. It is still not working. It doesn't work from
any PC, including other XP machines, so I am going to move this to an
XP newsgroup.

Thanks for your input.

The firewall is confirmed OFF and I did try it with and without
NetBEUI with no improvement. Hopefully I come up with something soon.
I would really like to start using Remote Desktop again! Thanks.

Hello,

Can you access that computer by using IP address? Can you ping that IP
address?

Thanks.

No, I cannot access the PC by IP address. If I ping it by name the IP
is looked up, but I get no response, if I ping it by IP I also get no
response.

Hello,

Since the ping result is unsuccessful, I suspect that it is a firewall
related issue or a connection problem.

Please try to install the NWLink IPX/SPX protocol on each computer on the
LAN for use by File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks.

To add the NWLink IPX/SPX protocol:

a. Open the Network Connections folder.

b. Right-click the LAN connection icon, and then click Properties.

c. On the General tab, Click Install.

d. Click Protocol, and then click Add.

e. Click the NWLink protocol, and then click OK.

If the problem persists, please let us know how you connect the four
machines in your home network and when the problem started.

Thank you very much for working with us.
