WinXP Pro SP1 - The network path was not found

J

Jako Grobler

I've had a problem with my WinXP SP1 laptop since forever and it's driving
me insane:

Nobody can see my PC shares!

From any machine in the network:
Start->Run: \\dell8600
"The network path was not found"

Ok, so:

From any machine in the network:
Browse network
Dell8600
Double click it
"The network path was not found"

Aaargh...

Try Google:

- Make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Check.
- Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled. Check.
- Edit gpedit.msc and allow Everyone access from the network. Check.
- Removed all shares, reboot, recreate all shares. Check.
- Give share access to Everyone, with security permissions to
Everyone. Check.
- Disable WinXP firewall. Check.
- Make sure network node type is Hybrid (ipconfig /all). Check.
- Make sure all PC's are in the same domain. Check.

Ok. Reboot. Try again from any pc on the network...

"The network path was not found"

*Sob!*

Please, help!

Regards,

Jako

What IP address does your laptop have?
Is it similar to the IP addresses of other computers on the network?
Can your computer see other computers?
Can you ping from your computer to any other, or from any other computer to
yours?
What hardware do you have in place for your network?

Is it similar to the IP addresses of other computers on the network?

Yes, all the computers are in the range 192.168.73.x
Can your computer see other computers?

Yes, no problems there.
Can you ping from your computer to any other, or from any other
computer to yours?

Yes, I can ping theirs, and they can ping mine.
What hardware do you have in place for your network?

We have a Dell Server PowerEdge 1600SC with Intel Pro/100+ adapter running
Windows Server 2003.
I have an Dell Inspiron 8600 with BroadCom 440x integrated controller
running Windows XP SP1.

What device connects the two computers?

It's via cable. I've got no problems seeing the server, and I can access
everybody else on the network quite easily without problems. It's just
other people that cannot connect to my PC. I think WinXP is refusing them
access but I don't know what else to change.

This is very frustrating! Do you think I should wipe WinXP and go back to
Win2000?

I wouldn't reinstall it. Does your current network use WINS?
Can you access your own machine from itself? eg. Goto start/run on the
laptop itself and type in \\dell8600. What do you see?

What exactly did you share? Can you specifically get to that share by name?
Keep in mind for the browser service to fully make the shares availalble, it
may take the machine upto 15 minutes from the time it was booted.

Is there any other personal firewall that is or even was on the laptop that
may have been removed? (ZA has an issue of not completely uninstalling from
a machine).

Not sure. How do I check? There is nothing listed in my TCP/IP settings
under the WINS heading.

Yes, no problems. It lists the shares as expected.

Been online locally for more than 5 hours, still no luck. I've got 2
shares, c:\Public (shared as Public) and c:\Transfer (shared as
Transfer).
Public is read-only for everyone, Transfer is read/write for everyone.
Is there any other personal firewall that is or even was on the laptop

I've never installed any firewalls on the laptop. Hmmm... Come to think
of it, I do have Symantec Enterprise VPN Client in order to connect from
home. I'll remove that and see what happens...

There should be at least three entries shown when nbtstat -n is run on that computer
and [ net view ] should show it's computer name also. Verify that the server service
is running. Try to access the share using IP address instead of name as in
\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\share. Other things to try are to look in Event Viewer for any
pertinent errors, make sure tcp/ip filtering is NOT enabled on the network adapter in
properties/tcp-tp/advanced/options as if it is enabled for tcp/ip it will allow pings
but not share access, try booting into safe mode with networking, using netsh to
reset tcp/ip, and running netdiag from the free support tools on the cdrom looking
for failed tests/warnings/errors. --- Steve

Follow Steve's suggestions. But to tell you, a VPN sure changes things.

Steve,

Thanks for all your help! I uninstalled Symantec Enterprise VPN Client and
now all the problems have gone. Everybody can see my shares! There has to
be a better VPN solution out there.

I'm a very happy bunny at the moment.

Cheers!

Hi.

I have had almost the same problem.
The problem is that netbios over tcp/ip doesn´t always work
as expected.

I recommend to install NetBEUI.

To install NetBEUI you need to have the winxp installation cd.

Try this page:

http://tinyurl.com/kg50

Or just search after "install netbeui winxp"

I hope this will solve your problem.

Regards, Pelle.
