Networking - write permission for folder, but not root of drive

Not sure if this is where I should ask, but ....

I want to share a hard drive on my desktop computer with my laptop. I
have a wireless router, security in place, and I have no trouble sharing
folders on my desktop with the laptop.

However, at this point, I want to share a second desktop hard drive with
the laptop and allow write permission to a folder on that drive, but not
to the entire drive.

I have shared the root of the drive (X:) and then I share the folder
(called backup) and also check - Allow network users to change my files
- for just that folder.

This does not work as I expected, as when I try to copy a file from the
laptop to X:\backup (using \\ComputerName\Drivename\backup, or the
mapped name, X:\backup), I get "access denied."

The only way I can get it to work is to check - Allow network users to
change my files - for the root as well. However, when I do this, I can
then copy the file from my laptop to ANY folder on X:, whether it is
shared or not. I do not want to allow that.

I am confused. This seems all wrong.

How do I share a drive (X:) so that it can be read, but only allow write
permission for one folder of that drive?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You don't share the drive or its root, only the folder you want shared should be
set as such w/permissions, then map to that folder and that folder only.

Ahhhh .... okay, thanks. I think I've got it now. And I really
appreciate you taking the time to help a networking novice get a handle
on things. That was getting very confusing.

(I'm writing a batch file that uses xcopy (xxcopy) to backup my laptop
to an external HD that's attached to my desktop.)
