networking Windows XP Home With Windows 2000 Professional

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 pro Laptop supplied by my work on the company Domain
that I use with a wireless adsl 4 port Router to connect to the internet and
Vpn into the office. All works Well. I recently purchased a windows XP home
laptop and that is wireless connected to the existing adsl router and
connects to the Internet fine.

However I would like bothe PC's to file and print share and I seem unable to
get them connected. I have shared the Hard Drives on Both Pc's but no luck.

Any assistance would be welcomed

Dave,

Windows XP Home use Simple File Sharing, that just requires enabling the Guest
account, using the sequence Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest
/active:yes" in the command window.

Windows 2000 uses Advanced File Sharing, that will use the Guest account if
enabled.

If you're involving a computer that normally attaches to a domain, you may have
to arrange connection of your computers to comply with domain standards. Is
there a domain admin at your work who should be involved in this?

Can you see each computer from the other? Open a command window (Start - Run -
"cmd") and type "net view". Do both computers display when this is done from
each computer?

Dave, posting your email address openly (was that your address after your name
above?) will get you more unwanted email, than wanted email. Learn to munge

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the info but I still have not solved the problem Guest accounts
are enabled and I can ping the WXPhome PC from the W2K PC but account see it
in the Network of thru net view.
The WXPhome PC cannot ping the W2K PC, Both PC's are getting an IP address
automatically from the adsl router and both are seeing the internet ok

OK, "cannot ping" is a bit more basic than "cannot share files".

Please start with ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.
