Networking Win98 and Win XPHome

There seem to be several threads on this subject, but I have started a
new one in order not to cause confusion. Apologies in advance if anyone
thinks that was incorrect.

I have a desktop running WinXP Home SP1 and a laptop running Win98SE,
both with all available updates. I have a 100BaseT network, with a
Belkin 4-port switch, because there should be three computers on the
network but one has died (off-network).

The computers can see each other and exchange files over the network. I
have the XP set up as the host for Internet access and the laptop set to
access the Internet via the host. The 'two computers' icon appears in
the laptop's system tray, indicating 'Internet gateway connected'. I am
running IEC, fully updated on both machines.

The problem is that the laptop cannot find the DNS server.

Here are the ipconfig.txt files:

Maybe just a typo, but your laptop shows a Default Gateway = 198.162.0.1,
and it should be 192.168.0.1. If that is accurate, it would account
for your problem.

It's not a typo; the ipconfig texts were sent to files and then copied
into the e-mail. I can't say I'm surprised about the errors (there is
another one under 'DNS servers'); after spending more than six hours
trying to get things to work, my eyes were seriously crossed.

However, I have corrected the errors and checked that ipconfig.txt now
reads correctly. Unfortunately, that doesn't solve the problem, and it
is deeper in that I thought. I tried connecting to a dotted quad,
213.151.36.104, with no success. After 'Connecting to site...' fails,
Microsoft Search tries to find the site, but eventually report 'No
Internet connection is available', which is certainly not so.

One clue may be that sometimes, not always, when starting the laptop I
get one of those frustrating error messages, 'IPHLPAPI.DLL cannot start.
Check file to determine the problem'. Well the file is there, in
C:\Windows\System, and is 32 KB. I don't know how to 'check' it. Norton
System Works doesn't flag a problem.

Hi

The page you visited at ezlan.net is mainly geared toward the LAN part of
you Network.

Your problem seems to be related to Sharing the internet.

May be this can Help:

Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing -
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=105

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? -
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=48

(This page was written by me a while ago. Ignore the prices in the links
bellow. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.)

If you opt to use a Router, the whole thing should look like this:

Probably spent 25 hours trying to set up Internet Connection Sharing in a new
Dell comp. Had a wired network between a HP comp and my Toshiba laptop before
replacing the HP with the new Dell. Been to all the websites concerning this,
and none address the problem of not finding the "allow other computers to
connect to the Internet through this computer" checkbox. Someone please help!!

I don't quite know what you mean. Go to Network Connections, which may
be on the Settings menu; if not go to Settings -> Control Panel and
scroll down to it.

Double click on whatever connection gives you access to the Internet,
and select the 'Advanced' tab. You should see the elusive checkbox
there. If not, please describe exactly the way the procedure fails.
