Networking: Using Client Laptop to Connect to Internet

I've recently setup a network with desktop (host) and laptop (client).
Both machines are using WinXP Pro SP1. Also I used a crossover cable
with ethernet cards in both the desktop and laptop. Can I still access
the Internet with the laptop? I've tried with no luck to date. Another
question, should both machines have the firewalls turned on. I'm the
only user and I prefer to keep it that way.

Thank you.

You can use Windows Internet Connection Sharing. Here are links to help
you with that:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics - ICS
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/clientwiz.htm - XP
ICS - Client Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard

You should have firewalls on both machines, but of course make sure
you've allowed your lan as Trusted. I think the ICS Setup Wizard will
ask you if you are sharing files and configure the Windows Firewall.

Thank you Malke, you've helped me once again.
