Networking two XP Home computers problem

ok, i have two computers each with individual access to an ethernet
connection for the internet. I am trying to also connect them together
individually with a seperate network card. i have had this working in the
past but it won't work now. i have used a hub to try and connect them and i
have a gaming cat5 also that i have tried and neither work anymore. The
cables are good and so are the cards. HELP!!!
