Home LAN Network setup problems

I have been running two laptops and a desktop (all on XP of Media Edition,
Home Edition and Pro respectively) from a Edimax router with wired-in Cat5E
ethernet to each computer seperately - i.e. the standalone cable modem
connects directly to the router which then distributes the packets etc.
Recently, two of use have wanted to play a game against each other and
despite trying to synchronise the two offending machines (the Desktop on Pro
and a laptop on Media) using the network setup wizard (amongst other wierd
and wonderful tricks, none of which worked), I am unable to either see any of
the other computers on the network that was supposedly created, nor connect
to them via the command prompt 'ping'

If anyone has any bright ideas or would like to explain the obvious mistake
I would be most obliged...

When a computer can't be pinged, the most likely problem is that a
firewall program (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Windows Firewall, etc) on
that computer is blocking access.

Some recent antivirus programs include firewall functions. For
example, Norton Antivirus 2006 has "Internet Worm Protection".

Configure the firewall to allow access by other computers on the local
area network.
