Home Network setup problems

Hi I have been trying to set up a home network from a desktop to a laptop and
have been following PChucks Network instructions on doing this. All is well
in setting up the laptop and it can see the desktop but trying to set up the
desktop using the Setup the Network using the Internet option is proving
problematical. All looks well until the last stage when I get the error
message Cannot Complete the Network Setup Wizard. I have tried to look at the
TCP/IP configuration but it is on Auto already. I used to be able to network
the two machines with a Crossover cable but it got lost and I have purchased
a Cross Wired cable as this is all that the computer dealer was offering. Are
they the same? I have however for this experiment been using an Ethernet
cable and connecting the two machines through a router. I have disabled
Norton AV on both machines. I also had a look at the IRPStackSize as I have
read so much and understood so little that makes any progress. The
IRPStackSize on the Desk top is conspicuous by it's absence and on the lap
top it is (11). I am loathe to change this and the only reason I looked at it
is because when I attempted to set up the network without internet connection
I got some result but then got the error message that Not Enough Server
Storage....etc As you can see I have had a real go but am at my wits end now
as to where to go now. After the error message on the completion Cannot
Complete the setup Wizard what should I do from here. I would like to get it
to work through the router. The laptop can log in to the internet and see the
desk top files OK but getting it to work both ways is the problem. Help?
Thanks
Charlie

It sounds to me like you are saying you are trying to set up Internet
Connection Sharing, and in doing so, you are probably trying to use the
address that the router uses, which you can't.

Set both machines to use auto-assigned addresses, plug the originating
network (presumably cable or DSL) into the router, and make sure you are
using Cat. 5 PATCH cables (not crossover) from each computer to the
router. You should see a green light on the router, one for each port
that has a computer plugged into it. You should see green lights on
each computer at the network connection port (sometimes amber, depends
on how the mfr decided to indicate speed.)

Put both computers into the same workgroup, let the router assign the
addresses.

I can't imagine why, if you have a router, you would -not- prefer to use
it instead of trying to use a crossover cable etc.

Hi DE
Thanks for your info. I am not trying to use the cross over. I did that
before I had a router and it worked fine. Now I have a router I am trying to
move on to use it. I am using Ethernet cables not corssover cables but if
you think I should use CAT. 5 Patch cables then I have them but I though that
as the PC works with an Ethernet cable to the router then the laptop should
as well. Is this not so? I am not trying to set up internet sharing as I can
do that with the wi-fi on the router and the laptop but i was trying to move
some large files from the Desk Top to the Lap Top and vice versa and thought
that a wired network between the two would be best? I have both machines
assigned to the auto-assigned addresses and the lights are as you describe.
As i have written in my first note, the laptop sees the internet (so it could
be internet sharing through the Ethernet cable) and can download files from
the desktop. It is to get the desktop to see the laptop that is causing the
problem. Both computers are in the same workgroup but i still get the faults
I have described.
Thanks for your help but I have already done all that you have advised.
Where to go now please.

Jack \(MVP-Networking\).

Hi
When you use a Router each computer connects to the Router on it own using
regular (Not crossover) Cat5e cable.
Network should lo like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg
Instructions to set the Network and the Router should be in the Router's
manual.
If the wizard does not work configure the network manually
To check the Network settings on each computer this can help,
http://www.ezlan.net/debg.html
While checking you can change manually what ever seems to be off.
If you disable Norton AV, leave IRPStackSize at default
Jack (MVP-Networking).

Thanks for that Jack
I will check the cables. Is the Ethernet cable the same as a straight
CAT5e? If not then I have some. The second link you sent me is the once that
would have been the most useful but when I try to access it it comes up as
page not found. Have you another link with the same info as this is the bit
that is over my head and i need to work my way through. Thanks again

Hi Jack. Well with your help I have made some progress. I can now, when using
My Network Places, View workgroup computers, see the other PC (the laptop) on
the network but when I try to open one of the sharing folders I get the error
message " Not Accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource ...etc. not enought server storage is available to process this
command" How can I get past this command? I can still download files from the
Desk Top to the laptop OK and both machines are using the internet through
the hard wiring and the router.
Thanks

Hi Jack Having put in the error message into this forum I found the bit about
the change in the StackSize. I have done that and I can say "yippee" it all
works now. Thanks for all of your help.

Charlie,
Where did you find this StackSize bit?
I have an existing MS router network with XP PCs that worked everyone had
axcess to the internet. I removed one XP PC from the network and added two
Vistas. Now the leftover XP computer has no connection to the internet. All
PCs see eachother and can share files and printer. But the XP PC can not get
on the internet.
Anyone have any input?
Thanx, Dave
