Lost internet connection after home network setup

Hi, Since I have set up a home network to swap files between my laptop and
desk top wirelessly I have found that my laptop only has internet access when
the desktop is booted up whereas before it used to work wirelessly through
the modem/router regardless of the state of the desktop. My laptop has Vista
and the desktop has XP. Could you through some light on what I have done and
how to sort it out?
Thanks Charlie

it sounds like you have setup an ICS connection/bridge connections
on the desktop. check the desktop and unbridge the connections.

Thanks for that Barb......... um you obviously are kind enough to give me
more credit than I deserve. I am a silver surfer and even though I boast I am
ahead of my contemporaries in understanding PC matters you have just stepped
outside of my expertise! Could you run that past me again in layman's terms,
e.g. how? Thanks. Charlie

Hi Barb
Me again. Done a bit of leg work as I should have done before mailing you
when I laid back and asked you to do it for me and found that I have no
bridge connection. I have been browsing your page and those of meet the
experts and found the bit about the LLTD responder for use between my XP desk
top and the Vista laptop. Is this something that I should have downloaded? I
am thinking of undoing all of my MSHome networking as I have got all of the
files across that I need at the moment and even though it would be useful to
have, if I could return to my previous state of accessing the interent
without having to boot up the desktop then any future tranfers can be done on
a memory stick. Sad I know but .. a means to an end.

First, perhaps if you read
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02july01.mspx
you will be able to remove the checkbox if you have setup ICS.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02april22.mspx
might help you determine if you set up a network bridge.

Both of Sharon's articles above should be "easy reading".

LLTD - would not impact your ability to connect to the Internet
