New network setup

I have currently a desktop networked to a laptop in the same area via a
cable. I now have a new desktop to replace the old one and will eventually
have to set up the network again. Do I have to do anything like deleting
anything on the laptop before starting on the new network setup? I plan on
setting up the network the same way for now via a cable but later will look
at how to do it wireless, is that very complicated and what is involved, new
modem etc for shared internet connection?

You shouldn't have to do anything to existing equipment, to add new equipment to
your network. That said, there are always details. There are dozens of details
in networking, and your description doesn't even begin to cover the issues that
